SOMEWHERE, OVER THE SHOULDER

(Photos by Zainab T.)

Blouse: Topshop/ Jacket: Zara/ Pants: ASOS/ Shoes: Nine West/ Bracelets: Marc by Marc Jacobs/ Bowtie: DID IT MYSELF, BITCHES

As much as I am dreading the drop in temperatures, the truth is, Fall is looming on the horizon, and I have little choice but to begin embracing transition pieces; layers galore! So today on the trend roster: Coat slingin'! Or as I call it, how NOT to wear a jacket.

Right now, the chicest way to wear a coat is to not. That's right folks, shoulders are in, and arms are out. The womens are skipping sleeves in favor of a slung-jacket look: just letting the coat drapped over their shoulders, guarding against the cold. If you follow the fashion over fashion month, you've probably noticed that the fashion elite have taken to this trend like gangbusters. Fashion insiders from all parts of the world are opting to sling jackets over their shoulders rather than wear them fully. Why? Well for starters, putting your arms through sleeves is like, so much extra work, and because it makes for a nonchalant look that elevates your chic status times 10.

And because I reject Fall and Winter, and because I've obviously declared myself as a lady who rejects arm holes, here's an Off-the-Shoulder rendition for the summer. This trend ensures that you give everyone a good eyeful of what you're wearing underneath so they can be suitably wowed by your ensemble. And probably gives you the edge if you get dressed every morning thinking "Would the Sartorialist photograph me in this?" since the street style hunters seem to go nuts for the affect effect. But alas, in my case, Sartorliast does not live in Bumblefuck Canada.

While this trend does relieve your arms from the constrictions of the sleeves, and therefore allows for more freedom to manipulate your fun zone, an open coat is logistically difficult to manage. Wave to a friend, and it falls. Turn a corner into a powerful gust, and there it goes. And perhaps the greatest disadvantage for us fashion bloggers; no more hailing of the cabs, folks. RIP, Taxi Industry of the world. But fret not, dear readers, for when arms fail their gestual purposes, we always have our lower limbs to rely on for communication, as so encapsulated by the photo below (the man in the back is trying to call security).

So here's to all my readers that loathe putting their arms in jacket sleeves. Do you think this trend is kewl? Will you embrace it in the fall?

Wearing a structured jacket or blazer over one’s shoulders on a sunny day is currently the epitome of carefree style. This laid-back look is so easy to emulate and is making a comeback from old Hollywood movies and your stereotypical varsity college with the best-dressed girls and guys giving it a go. Shoulder pads and tailored structure is integral to this trend, allowing for the lovely draping of the fabric around the wearer. A jacket over the shoulders goes so sweetly with a short, a-line dress on a mild day and can be worn with almost any smart-casual outfit. Whether for work or play, a blazer over the shoulders is chic for any occasion and is one of the more cost effective and effortless trends of the season. - See more at: http://www.thetrendspotter.net/2013/05/trend-report-201314-geometric-animal-prints-i-jacket-over-shoulder.html#sthash.wAoXndZy.dpuf

  7. I don't think I will embrace the trend, it's either too hot in the South of France to wear a jacket, or too cold not to wear it properly :) Jokes aside, it's pretty cool, but I'm more casual and I prefer a good boyfriend shirt around the waist.

  8. Ahaha! That last photo! :D
I really quite like the way the whole cape/jacket trend looks, it feels so carefree & casual, but I could never wear mine like that just because of how impractical it is! I hate having to faff around with things & I'm so clumsy anyway, it'd end up falling off & I'd lose it! Great for photos, not great for actual day to day wear though I think. LOVE the bowtie by the way!

Dear Miss Roxthefox, if you are not a model you are missing your vocation! You really look beautiful and the pictures are great! I loved the shoes this time, as my favorite piece! The trend, yes, it is nice, I like it! I find it elegant! Thank you so much for your suggestion about meditation!!! I do love it and I practice it since teenage years, though I must confess that I haven't practiced it for 2 weeks, I guess... so that was the perfect thing to write me: it reminded me of that, to practice meditation again! 19. Hmmm what is it exactly you're trying to call upon on that last photo! Hahaha! I love that pose. I hope to see more of it too FYI! Sadly I won't be participating in this trend. Firstly I have broad shoulders so attracting attention to those manly mo-fo's are a serious no-no. Plus it's heading into the summer season so jackets are also a no-no in the searing Aussie heat. I am also pleasantly surprised and happy that you mentioned their utter impracticability. You can't do shit with it draped over your shoulders it's only purpose is to look purdy in photos. Period!

Spiritually visit as in religion wise? If so Japan is not the place for that to experience that. I'd recommend here (Korea) for all their temples, Nepal or even India.

  87. You cracked me up with this post, Rox :-D .. and the last pose is outrageous!
I don't think I will go with the coat hanging on the shoulder trend. But you are right, once you pointed it out, I noticed it with most of the bloggers! ;-)

  89. Wow, you looks absolutely amazing! You have such style, and can pull off the most versatile things! I am such a fan of green and yellow together...I think colors that are close on the color wheel always end up looking amazing together. It's crazy how close autumn is getting now!!! I am excited but said at the same time, I am a huge lover of summer, the only thing I don't appreciate are the sticky nights and higher electric bill ;)
